Artist Statement

My mom, Betty, was always my biggest fan. When I was only 7 years old she used to hang my drawings in the hallway of our house using a stapler. I know she believes in me still today, even though I lost her in 2000.

I like to think I have a somewhat unusual style. I love creating paintings of subjects that are familiar, but presenting them in an unfamiliar way . . . using a slightly different take, or incorporating an unusual setting or angle . . . all the while insuring that what is being presented feels comfortable and familiar. When I catch someone looking at one of my paintings with something more than a fleeting glance, where they're tilting their head a little and studying it . . . then I feel the circle is completed and I have created a work of art. I use recycled materials as much as possible in my work, and I like to think that when I work with those materials I am breathing new life into something discarded. I love rescuing those items, and I become inspired to think of them in a new way, changing them into something a little different and then, finally, sharing them with you.
